When Life Changes, Our Brains Need a New Map
Last week, I wrote about blind spots—how what we don't see can sometimes have a greater impact on our lives than what we do. That conversation stayed with me as I recently listened to a fascinating episode of the Hidden Brain podcast featuring psychologist and neuroscientist Dr. Norman Farb. I found myself thinking, Yes...this is exactly what I see in my coaching clients—and in my own life.
For years, I have studied how grief, stress, and major life transitions affect both the brain and the body.
One of the most profound insights I have gained is that healing often involves something surprisingly practical: creating a new mental map.
That idea has taken on very personal meaning for me. Over the past four months, I have moved twice. I relocated from Florida back to my home state of Minnesota and am now settling into a new home. While these have been positive changes, I have also found myself overwhelmed, mentally fatigued, and physically exhausted. At first, I wondered why. Then I remembered something I know professionally but sometimes forget to apply personally.
My brain is working incredibly hard.
It isn't simply adjusting to a new address. It is updating thousands of predictions it has made automatically for years. Which cabinet holds the coffee mugs? Where do I turn after leaving the grocery store? Where does the morning sunlight come through the windows? How long does it take to get to my favorite walking trail? Which neighbors wave? Where do I feel at home?
Every one of these seemingly insignificant experiences requires my brain to revise its internal map of the world.
Dr. Farb explains that our brains were never designed to consciously process every piece of information that comes our way. Doing so would be impossibly slow and metabolically expensive. Instead, the brain evolved to recognize patterns, automate them, and build predictive models that allow us to navigate the world with remarkable efficiency. The first time we drive to a new destination, we consciously think about every turn, every stoplight, and every landmark. After driving the route enough times, we hardly think about it at all. Our brain has built a map.
But these maps extend far beyond physical navigation. They shape how we approach work, relationships, conversations, and even our expectations of ourselves. They help determine what we pay attention to, what we ignore, what we believe is possible, and what we automatically assume to be true.
In essence, our brains are constantly asking, Based on everything I've learned before, what is most likely to happen next?
This remarkable efficiency is supported by a collection of brain regions called the default mode network (DMN). Although neuroscientists are still learning about its many functions, one of its primary roles appears to be helping us organize our experiences into coherent mental models of the world. The DMN helps us remember the past, imagine the future, construct our sense of self, and predict what comes next. In many ways, it functions as the brain's autopilot.
Most of the time, this serves us beautifully. But there is a downside. As Shankar Vedantam points out in the podcast, problems arise when our map of the world begins to feel like the world itself. This is where last week's discussion about blind spots becomes especially relevant.
Dr. Farb suggests that our habits are not simply habits of behavior—they are also habits of perception. Our brains automatically decide where to look, whom to pay attention to, what deserves our emotional energy, and what can safely be ignored. Every time we rely on these mental shortcuts, we become more efficient. But efficiency comes with a cost.
We stop seeing everything else.
The very maps that help us navigate life can also create enormous blind spots.
If our brains have learned that someone is difficult, we may overlook moments of kindness. If we believe we always fail, we may miss evidence that we're growing. If we believe the world is unsafe, we naturally notice every threat while overlooking moments of beauty, connection, or possibility.
Our maps quietly filter reality without our awareness.
That doesn't mean our brains are broken. It means they are doing exactly what they evolved to do. The challenge is that life changes. Relationships change. People change. We change. And sometimes our maps don't keep up.
This framework has enormous implications for grief.
One of the most important things I have learned through my studies of grief is that grief is not simply an emotional experience—it is also a neurological one.
When someone dies...
When a marriage ends...
When we receive an unexpected diagnosis...
When we retire...
When children leave home...
When we relocate...
When our identity shifts...
our brains continue operating from yesterday's map.
We instinctively reach for the phone to call someone who has died. We expect our spouse to walk through the door. We think, I should tell Mom about this, before remembering she is no longer here.
Our brains aren't malfunctioning. They are updating.
For years—sometimes decades—they built a remarkably accurate model of our lives. Suddenly, reality changes while the brain continues predicting from the old model. Every painful reminder becomes another opportunity for the brain to gradually revise its expectations.
This process, known in neuroscience as reducing prediction error, is one of the ways neuroplasticity works. Each time reality differs from expectation, the brain receives new information and slowly updates its internal model.
Unfortunately, stress makes that process much harder.
Dr. Farb uses the metaphor of a groove worn into a path. The more often our thoughts travel the same route, the easier it becomes for them to return there. Under stress, our attention becomes fragile. Instead of consciously choosing where to focus, we fall back into familiar mental habits.
The brain defaults to what it already knows, even if those patterns no longer serve us.
This may also explain why grief, anxiety, depression, and burnout often feel so repetitive. Rather than remaining open to new experiences, the default mode network continually rehearses familiar stories:
"This shouldn't have happened."
"I'll never feel like myself again."
"Life wasn't supposed to look like this."
The map becomes more vivid than the territory.
One of the most fascinating parts of Dr. Farb's research involves interoception—our awareness of internal bodily sensations such as breathing, heartbeat, muscle tension, warmth, or the heaviness in our chest. His neuroimaging studies suggest that people vulnerable to depression often become less connected to these bodily sensations while becoming increasingly absorbed in their internal narratives.
When we lose contact with what our bodies are experiencing in the present moment, we lose one of the brain's richest sources of new information. Instead of updating our map with what is happening now, we become trapped inside what happened then.
Grief, I believe, works much the same way. Healing from it rarely happens through thinking harder.
Instead, healing can occur as we reconnect with our senses. We feel the warmth of the morning sun, hear birds singing, notice the smell of pine trees, laugh unexpectedly with a friend, prepare dinner in a new kitchen, or hold a grandchild's hand. Every sensory experience gives the brain fresh information that the world is different now.
And little by little, the map changes. Not because we forget what we have lost. But because our brains gradually learn that life continues to offer beauty, connection, and meaning alongside grief.
As a coach, I often remind clients that healing is not about returning to who we were before loss. There is no going back. Instead, healing asks us to become someone who can carry both grief and hope. Someone who honors the old map while gently creating another. Perhaps that is one of the quiet miracles of being human. Our brains remain capable of learning throughout our entire lives. Even after profound loss. Even after unexpected change. Even after heartbreak.
And perhaps that is also the antidote to our blind spots.
When we intentionally reconnect with our senses—with what we see, hear, feel, smell, and experience in this moment—we allow our brains to notice what our old maps have been filtering out.
We begin to see new possibilities. We begin to update old assumptions. We begin, quite literally, to find our way again.
So if you find yourself feeling overwhelmed during a season of change, perhaps offer yourself this gentle reminder:
My brain is learning a new world.
And that takes time.
